The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins was a good, quick thriller. It is Hawkins’ debut adult novel and it was fast paced with interesting characters. This story is billed as a modern take on the book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I didn’t really know the story of Jane Eyre well so I did not know what to expect, but if you are a Jane Eyre fan you might not be surprised by any of the events here. In The Wife Upstairs, Jane is a young woman trying to rid herself of her past and start a new life. She moves to Birmingham, AL and finds work walking dogs in a very upscale neighborhood. She meets handsome, rich Eddie in that neighborhood and realizes he is her chance to have it all, even though his wife (Bea) died just 6 months before along with her best friend. Jane and Eddie’s relationship quickly escalates and she moves in with him and that is when some odd things start happening – strange noises, police getting new evidence in Bea’s death, etc. Will Jane stick around to marry Eddie or will her better senses prevail? What is in her past that she is running from? All is revealed in the end.
And since there is a bit of a dog aspect to the story, I added my Australian Labradoodle Skippy to the pic!
This was one of my Book of the Month Picks!
