I love historical fiction and The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott got a lot of press and good reviews so I was excited to read it! I really liked the topics in the book – spies, literature (Dr. Zhivago), love affairs, and even a mother-daughter relationship. The story overall was good and the different aspects tied together well but it just didn’t have the depth that I was expecting. I would have loved more about the female spies and more about the difficulties in Russia (Pasternak has it pretty easy it seemed). I am glad I read the book as I did not know much about this period of time and really didn’t know much about Boris Pasternak and Doctor Zhivago and I will definitely read another book by Prescott. I think my high expectations contributed to my just average review but I think if you are looking for a fairly easy read with all these topics this would be a great choice! The was also a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick in 2019!
